As someone who made this transition last year. I would say the grass is greener on the other side. I went from Rural Carrier at USPS to RPCD at UPS.

However, while I feel the grass is greener. To give you a brief idea, there are things that should be noted. I work twice as much as I did at the post office. I was working 30 hours weeks, I now work about 50-60. Around here you can work up to 14 hours in a day. The packages I deal with are generally quite a bit larger than the SPRS that I was routinely dealing with at the PO.

Lastly, being hired as a driver off the street is incredibly rare. From what I've been told by others here and drivers in my center, it's almost damn near impossible and I should be counting my blessings as the usual path to driver is starting from the inside.

But, warehouse workers are paid more than $19 per hour. What are the daily hours like? Work/home balance? Pension? 401k match?

I am 6 months away from all of those things with the PO. After 2 years of part time city carriers (rural rules are different), you are automatically converted to careered status and better benefits. Slight pay increase. Better PTO and finally sick leave.

Well, you won't get that many hours at UPS, but your body will be abused. It's a lot of physical work and will probably take you years to get into a position with less manual labor, such as feeders....and even they can be forced to work inside until they have enough seniority.

Edited to add: the pay is better, though. It also takes 9 months before benefits kick in (your region may vary). You will start as a part time worker, even after you join the union you are only guaranteed 3.5 per day. Many regions take 3-7 years to go full time, but sometimes you can get there much faster!
